The Ed Hardy clothing brand was created in 2004 by French fashion designer Christian Audigier, who licensed the name and designs of legendary tattoo artist Don Ed Hardy. The brand quickly became a global phenomenon, thanks to its bold, eye-catching graphics and its celebrity endorsements. Hardy was born in 1945 in Whittier, California. He began tattooing at the age of 16, and quickly developed a reputation for his unique style, which combined Japanese and American tattoo traditions. In the 1970s, he opened his own tattoo shop in Hollywood, which became a popular destination for celebrities and other trendsetters. In 2004, Audigier approached Hardy with the idea of creating a clothing line based on his designs. Hardy was initially hesitant, but he eventually agreed, and the Ed Hardy brand was born. The line was an instant success, thanks to its rebellious attitude and its appeal to celebrities such as Madonna, Britney Spears, and David Beckham.
